Young people from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina determined to eliminate violence are gathering in the Leadership Camp at Sutjeska

In the period from 1 to 5 August 2019, CARE's partner organizations Association XY from Sarajevo, Perpetuum Mobile from Banja Luka and Youth Power from Mostar will hold the Youth Leadership Camp for young people from Mostar, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Livno, Bijeljina, East Sarajevo, Travnik, Brčko, Tuzla and Zenica at Sutjeska.

In addition to workshops that aim to increase the knowledge and skills on leadership and prevention of violent extremism, young people will also have the opportunity to try out the team building competition. Six teams comprised of 60 young people will compete for the title of the best team with the goal of promoting healthy lifestyles.

According to the Leader of the program area Health and healthy lifestyles of the Association XY, Feđa Mehmedović, the Leadership Camp brings together the most active young people who have shown an extraordinary commitment to the prevention of violence in previous years and who actively involve their peers in activities that are of great importance to our society and our country.

"Being a young leader is not easy, it is something that entails a great deal of responsibility. In the context of violence prevention, young leaders are experienced peer educators or trained volunteers who have the knowledge, desire and sincere motivation which they show through devoting their personal time to the welfare and well-being of others. Young leaders are young people who will be trained and learn within the educational program how to use leadership skills in mobilizing peers and their affirmation and inclusion in health promotion and violence prevention programs. Therefore, this camp will be attended only by the selected ones, those who, thanks to their efforts, have "earned" to gain such an important title within the camp", said Mehmedović.

"We are particularly pleased by the fact that this is a traditional camp due to which our country will become richer in August by 60 new young leaders who will shape the society in which we live in a mold of tolerance, mutual respect and affirmation of non-violent forms of behavior. The camp is an opportunity for young people to meet their peers from other cities who are doing the same or similar things, who are united around the same idea, which is that this is a country in which violence does not have and should not have its place, but also to acquire a new friendships. The Leadership camp is one step out of many we make on the way to building better Bosnia and Herzegovina, safer Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country where our children will be more secure and happier", concluded the Leader of the program area Health and healthy lifestyles of the Association XY Feđa Mehmedović.

Project Manager of CARE International in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Saša Petković, PhD, emphasizes the importance of the program that is focused on working with young people.

"Twenty years of working with young people is not enough time for me not to be positively surprised again with the potential and wealth that our country has at its disposal. This wealth is our young people who are ready to promote nonviolent behavior, healthier lifestyles, gender and every other equality and equity in society. CARE is an organization that has recognized this and focused its work on the prevention and additional education of young people, building their life skills and competencies to enter the complex world of adults. I hope that the authorities at all levels will shift from declarative to more concrete work with young people because that is the only way we can count on a brighter future", said Petković.

The activity was implemented within the project Young Men Initiative II: "Promoting Healthier Lifestyles among Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina by Challenging Gender Stereotypes II", supported by the Government of Switzerland, the OAK Foundation, the Austrian Development Agency and CARE International Bosnia and Herzegovina.
